چکیده

We investigate subsumption algorithms for logic-based knowledge representation languages of the kl-one family. We deene an attribu-tive concept description language that contains the logical connectives conjunction, disjunction, and negation, as well as role quantiication, number restrictions and role intersection. We describe a rule based calculus to decide subsumption in this language, that closely resembles the tableaux calculus of rst order predicate logic. Furthermore, we give polynomial space algorithms for certain sublanguages.

Inference System - System Description - Franz Baader , Bernhard Hollunder November 1990 Technical Memo TM

The knowledge representation system KL-ONE first appeared in 1977 . Until then many systems based on the idea of KL-ONE have been built. The formal modeltheoretic semantics which has been introduced for KL-ONE languages [BL84] provides means for invest igating soundness and co mplete ness of inference algorithms. It turned out that almost all implemented KL-ONE systems such as BACK, KL-TWO , LO...

Deduction in Concept Languages: From Subsumption to Instance Checking

It is a common opinion that subsumption is the central reasoning task in frame-based knowledge representation languages (or concept languages). Intuitively, a concept C subsumes another concept D if the set of objects represented by C is a superset of the one represented by D. When individual objects are taken into account, the basic deduc-tive task for retrieving information from a knowledge b...

Towards practical taxonomic classification for description logics on the Semantic Web

Description logics offer a well-defined semantics for many common and useful reasoning tasks that can be formalized under the notion of subsumption and are currently finding use as a representation language for the Semantic Web (e.g. DAML+OIL). For this domain, description logics can be highly useful for reasoning about relationships between entities in distributed knowledge bases by classifyin...

Query Answering in Concept - Based KnowledgeRepresentation Systems : Algorithms , Complexity , and Semantic

The idea of developing knowledge representation systems based on a structured representation of knowledge was rst pursued with Semantic Networks and Frames. Later, concept languages (also called terminological languages, or description logics) have been introduced with the aim of providing a simple and well-established rst-order semantics to capture the meaning of the most popular features of t...

The Equivalence of Model-Theoretic and Structural Subsumption in Description Logics

A new approach to the semantics of description logics, using concept algebras, was introduced in [Dionne et al., 1992b]. In that approach, the terms of a description logic, i.e., concept descriptions, were viewed as elements of a free algebra. In the context of a given knowledge base possibly involving cycles, an intensional semantics was given by mapping every concept description to a possibly...
